Accelerated Development: Keeping Innovation on Schedule

Nov 30, 2016
Aging demographics, increasing health conditions, and pressures to treat patients more cost efficiently are driving the medical device market toward new product innovation. Custom development and new conceptual typically trigger lengthy schedules and delays; however, there are services available to help expedite development.
Accelerated development services are a group of techniques used to quickly develop a prototype. Depending on the project complexity and the technology needed to execute the task, accelerated development services may take anywhere from one to four weeks, as compared to traditional development services which can take an average of four to eight weeks.
Accelerated development services offer numerous benefits for those that utilize them. Vendors providing these services, typically grant access to a dedicated, cross-functional engineering team. Devoted specifically to new development, the team focuses on building the best solution. Cross-functional engineers offer a broad range of collaboration skills bringing expedited results throughout stages of feasibility to commercialization.
Another benefit to projects utilizing accelerated development services is access to suites specifically for research and development projects. The suites are readily available for the project, rather than having to fit into a larger production schedule.  Additionally, an array of raw materials and inventories are on site and can be leveraged quickly.
While a number of projects can take advantage of accelerated development services, some may still be forced to follow traditional development services due to complex specifications or limitations in raw materials on hand. Occasionally, projects may require a rare polymer, not available in existing inventories, or complex specifications may require advanced coordination, which restrict the accelerated process of development services.
In order to prepare projects for accelerated development services, it is helpful to have a list of clear specifications and user requirements. Knowing all the information at the start of the project can help eliminate delays later in the process. Additionally, documenting flexible requirements as well as fixed requirements at the start of the project can be beneficial. This provides a clear level of priority throughout the development process.
