Biomaterial Solutions

Secant Group’s R&D team has combined novel polymer technology with tissue engineering concepts to develop next-generation implantable solutions for regenerative medicine.

The key enabler for these implantable solutions is poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS). Unlike traditional synthetic materials used for permanent implants, PGS is a biodegradable implantable polymer that can mimic the body’s natural tissue environment and has the potential to revolutionize implant performance.

Our team of expert researchers collaborates with academic research teams and practicing clinicians to integrate the advantages of PGS into novel patient-centric solutions, including bioresorbable patches, hollow organs, and vascular grafts.

A solutions-focused approach

Understanding how synthetic materials (e.g., a medical implant) interact with native tissue is crucial for developing a successful biomedical structure. Secant’s PGS is designed with the body’s response in mind.

 Nonimmunogenic
• Resorbs into the body as naturally occurring metabolites and promotes healthy tissue growth, decreasing the potential for chronic inflammation and infection at the site of implantation

Biodegradable
• Biodegrades via surface erosion, enabling better control of the degradation process

Customizable
• Tunable chemical and physical properties to optimize performance for many applications

 Elastomeric
• Has flexible properties to create implants similar to native tissue, reducing risk of implant and tissue compliance mismatch

With decades of polymer, biomaterial, and textile experience in implantables, Secant has developed approaches to selecting the most appropriate combination of materials to meet specific application requirements. Integrating PGS within a textile solution can support the reparative process following device implantation. PGS coatings and surface treatments on 2D or 3D textile scaffolds can provide the optimal physical and mechanical properties for implant success.
